Zhenya and I worked tirelessly to prepare for her IVF protocol, ensuring that every aspect was covered:

With such thorough preparation, the IVF protocol proceeded smoothly without any unexpected events. Zhenya’s positive attitude played a key role—she was fully committed to the process, staying optimistic and trusting that it would work. She continued to work, stay active, and follow all the necessary recommendations during the waiting period.

A few days before the scheduled HCG test, Zhenya decided to take a home pregnancy test. To her surprise, a faint line appeared. The next day, the line grew darker. At 7 days post-transfer (DPP), her HCG was 53.5 nmol/L. As expected, Zhenya retested her HCG two days later, expecting it to double every 48-72 hours. On day 9 post-transfer, the HCG was 87.5 nmol/L.

The Rollercoaster of IVF: Managing Expectations and Staying Optimistic

Zhenya, well-versed in IVF and HCG levels, began to monitor her results closely. On day 12 post-ovulation (DPO), her HCG was 88.4 nmol/L, which hadn’t significantly increased in the past three days. The doctor decided to cancel her support. However, with 11 IVF cycles of experience, I supported Zhenya emotionally and prepared her for all possible outcomes. Despite the uncertainty, Zhenya stayed positive and was already thinking about the next steps.

At 17 DPO, Zhenya decided to take another pregnancy test to check if the line had disappeared or if her HCG was dropping, signaling the start of her period. To her surprise, the test showed a strong second line. She immediately had her HCG tested again, and the result was 627.3 nmol/L.

This was a huge surprise for everyone, including the reproductive specialist, who was shocked by the sudden rise. They resumed support and began to check for any signs of an ectopic pregnancy. The doctor instructed Zhenya to come in for an ultrasound once her HCG reached 1500 nmol/L. Over the following days, Zhenya’s HCG levels soared:

• 19 DPO: 2214 nmol/L
• 21 DPO: 2413 nmol/L
• 23 DPO: 4953 nmol/L
• 25 DPO: 8900 nmol/L

An ultrasound confirmed the presence of a fetal sac, and as time went on, they saw the embryo and even heard the heartbeat.

A Joyous Outcome: The Power of Persistence and Faith

Zhenya and her husband remained anxious about the pregnancy’s progress, but regular ultrasounds showed the fetus was developing normally. Right before New Year’s, they completed an NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test), and by January 1, they received the fantastic news that their baby girl was healthy!

The couple, overjoyed, celebrated with T-shirts announcing they would soon become grandparents. Shortly after, they had a 12-week scan that confirmed everything was progressing within normal ranges.

Although two trimesters remained, I felt confident that everything would go smoothly. We all wished this couple the joy of a smooth pregnancy and a healthy birth in the summer.

Dara and her husband decided to undergo IVF after facing challenges with infertility. They were overjoyed when they finally achieved pregnancy on the third cryo-transfer, and a beautiful baby girl named Paloma was born.

However, after the long-awaited arrival of their child, Dara faced unexpected struggles with postpartum depression. It took several months for her to regain a sense of normalcy, and motherhood was more challenging than she had anticipated. Living in a foreign country without a support system, where there were no free daycare or affordable childcare options, only added to the stress. Nannies were expensive, making it difficult to find balance.

Eventually, Dara was able to send her three-year-old daughter to preschool, which allowed her to focus more on her career, her husband, and herself. But soon after, Dara received an email from her IVF clinic reminding her about the payment for storing her frozen embryos. While the idea of having another child was appealing, she realised there was nothing more she could do at that time.

A few months later, we met with Dara. During our meeting, she shared that she was gathering the strength to have an open conversation with her husband about their future family planning. After discussing it as a family, they decided they no longer wanted to continue paying for the storage of the embryos. Yet, Dara felt that Paloma needed a sibling.

As we delved deeper into her feelings, it became clear that Dara wasn’t ready for another pregnancy. The thought of going through IVF, pregnancy, childbirth, and the possibility of facing postpartum depression again was overwhelming for her. Despite her desire to put her family’s needs first, Dara hadn’t fully considered her own emotional and physical well-being.

Dara is also a deeply religious woman who had undergone IVF, frozen her embryos, but was now reluctant to use them. This posed a significant dilemma, as there are only a few options available for unused embryos:

1. Discarding the embryos
2. Donating them to another family
3. Using them for medical research

None of these options felt right for Dara, so we worked together to find a solution that was both legally and religiously acceptable. After careful thought, Dara made the decision to have the embryos defrosted and placed symbolically at the grave of her beloved grandfather. This option provided her with peace of mind, knowing that she could move forward without guilt or regret.

Marina underwent the egg retrieval process, and from the 13 eggs collected, eight were fertilised, with five embryos being frozen. A few months later, Marina returned for her embryo transfer, and pregnancy was achieved on the first attempt. Just a few days ago, the couple joyfully welcomed their beautiful baby girl, Paloma, into the world.

Olga underwent a thorough fertility examination, and the results showed that her husband needed to take a spermogram. The analysis revealed that he had no sperm in his seminal fluid, leading to a devastating diagnosis: testicular cancer. The doctors offered two options: the TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) procedure to retrieve sperm before chemotherapy or the option of sperm donation.

With heavy hearts and tear-filled eyes, Olga and her husband were handed brochures with information on what to do next. Olga was left with many emotions and questions. She felt upset that, influenced by her husband’s wishes, they had relied on nature for so long. At the same time, she felt deep sorrow for her husband, who was now facing cancer treatment, but also feared that she might never become a mother or carry her husband’s child.

Step-by-Step Approach: Dealing with Infertility and Cancer

We took everything one step at a time. The first goal was to stay positive about the outcome of the TESA procedure. If it didn’t work, we would explore alternative options for starting a family.

The procedure was a success, and four ampoules of sperm were frozen for later insemination. However, I had questions for the local doctors in France, particularly as to why Olga was not offered ovarian stimulation and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) as part of the treatment plan.

Olga’s husband underwent surgery to remove the affected testicle and started chemotherapy. Meanwhile, Olga began preparing for insemination, focusing on both her physical health and emotional well-being. With only four chances left to become pregnant, every step needed to be perfect.

IVF Success: A Journey of Persistence and Optimism

The first insemination attempt ended in failure, leaving only three chances for success. But Olga remained undeterred. She worked tirelessly on her mental preparation, using techniques like meditation, visualization, and creating an action plan for the implantation phase, followed by a solid plan for the waiting period.

Her dedication and hard work paid off. The following month, Olga received the life-changing news she had been hoping for. She was pregnant!

Now, her beautiful son is growing in their family, a symbol of their resilience, love, and unwavering hope.

The Moral of This IVF Journey: Never Give Up on Your Dream of Parenthood
